Media selection is an optics decision, not a cable decision. The transceiver you intend to run sets the allowable channel loss and reach; the cable, connectors and patch panels then have to fit inside that budget with margin left for future repairs.
The choices
- Direct attach copper. Cheapest and lowest power for in-rack links up to about three metres, but stiff and bulky — a cabinet full of DAC can defeat a vertical manager.
- Active optical cable. Light and flexible for row-length links; a fixed assembly, so damage to one end means replacing the whole cord.
- Multimode OM4 / OM5. Cheap optics for reaches around 100 m. Each mated connector pair spends loss budget, so a structured path with cassettes at both ends needs the maths done up front.
- Single-mode OS2. Effectively unlimited reach for a hall and future-proof against speed upgrades; optics cost more and end-face cleanliness becomes non-negotiable.
- Pre-terminated MPO trunks. Factory-tested trunks plus cassettes give fast, repeatable installs — provided polarity, gender and fiber count are planned before ordering.
- Category 6A copper. The right answer for out-of-band management, sensors and PoE devices; keep it out of the high-speed data path.
Working the loss budget
- Start from the optics. Take the transceiver's maximum channel insertion loss, subtract fiber attenuation over the route, then allocate what remains to connectors and splices.
- Count every mated pair. A structured link commonly has four or more: equipment cord, cassette, trunk, cassette, equipment cord.
- Leave margin. Hold back a few tenths of a dB for cleaning damage, a future repair splice and ageing.
- Verify, don't assume. Measure the installed channel; a design budget is a prediction, and the tester result is the fact.
Cleanliness and handling
- Inspect, clean, inspect again before every mating — contamination is the single most common cause of optical faults.
- Cap unused adapters and cords; an open port collects dust in hours.
- Respect minimum bend radius on fiber cords, especially inside cable managers and at the cassette.
