Pathways are the part of the plant nobody re-does. Trays, ladder rack and conduits get installed at build time and then filled by every subsequent project, so fill ratio, separation and access are worth arguing about early.
Route options
- Overhead ladder rack. Strong, open and easy to inspect; the default for copper and fiber trunks above the cabinets, usually on two or three tiers to separate services.
- Wire basket tray. Lighter and cheaper, good for branch runs, with edge protection where cable leaves the basket.
- Fiber raceway. Enclosed, radius-controlled ducting for patch cords between patch fields, protecting cords from crushing and over-bending.
- Underfloor. Still used where a raised floor exists, but it competes with cooling airflow and hides abandoned cable โ keep it for power where possible.
Sizing and separation
- Fill ratio. Design to roughly 25 to 40 percent fill at handover so later projects have somewhere to go; a full tray forces cable to be laid on top of cable, crushing what is below.
- Layering. Separate fiber, copper and power onto different tiers or trays. Fiber on top, never under a copper bundle.
- Power separation. Maintain the separation your standard requires between unshielded copper and power runs, and cross at right angles when a crossing is unavoidable.
- Bend and drop management. Use radius drops and waterfalls where cable leaves containment into a cabinet; a sharp tray edge is a slow-motion failure.
Housekeeping
- Support cable at the specified interval โ no cable resting on ceiling grid, pipework or sprinkler heads.
- Bond metallic pathways per code; containment is part of the grounding system.
- Remove abandoned cable. It is a fire-load and pathway-capacity problem, and codes increasingly require its removal.
