Rack dressing is where cable management is judged. The goal is a cabinet where any single cord can be removed and replaced without disturbing its neighbours, at any hour, by someone who did not build it.
Hardware and layout
- Vertical managers. Full-height, both sides, with fingers deep enough for the eventual cord count — cords route vertically first, then horizontally into the panel.
- Horizontal managers. One rack unit of management between patch panels keeps cords out of the panel's own bend radius.
- Patch field placement. Locate panels so the shortest sane cord reaches the switch; a patch field at the wrong end of the rack doubles cord length.
- Slack and service loops. A short, radius-controlled service loop at the panel allows for re-termination; a coil of surplus cord in the tray is not a service loop.
Technique
- Hook-and-loop, not cable ties. Reusable straps at consistent intervals, snug but never compressing the jacket. Plastic ties over-tighten and change the cable's transmission behaviour.
- Exact cord lengths. Stock a small ladder of lengths — 0.5, 1, 2, 3 m — and use the shortest that routes properly instead of coiling the excess.
- Route, then dress. Lay every cord along its path first, then bundle. Bundling as you go produces crossovers that cannot be undone later.
- Colour discipline. Assign colour by function — production, out-of-band, storage, cross-connect — and publish the scheme so it survives staff changes.
- Bend radius at the connector. Boots and cords need clearance; the last few centimetres in front of a panel is where most damage happens.
Change management
- Remove the old cord when a link is retired — same visit, not later.
- Never patch through a cabinet you are not documenting; undocumented cross-cabinet cords are the origin of most patch-field decay.
- Photograph the front and rear of the cabinet after work; it is the cheapest as-built you will ever produce.
